Teaching Mathematics For Pre-School

Various cognitive learning theories play an integral role in the teaching and learning of early mathematics. The study of early mathematics is often built upon pupils’ pre-number experiences which provide the basis for building early number concepts and the foundation for learning later skills.

Discuss the implications of any two cognitive learning theories (e.g. Piaget, Bruner, Dienes, Vygotsky) that, in your opinion, have impacted the teaching and learning of pre-school mathematics for any two topics of your choice.  You are encouraged to structure your discussion according to the following sub-tasks. With reference to the learning theories selected and the National Pre-school Standard Mathematics Curriculum:

-Identify and clarify two key pre-number concepts vital for developing number sense, mathematical thinking and skills amongst pre-schoolers using relevant examples from the two topics chosen;

-Suggest ways (strategies, activities, resources, examples, etc.) backed by appropriate learning theories to help pre-school pupils attain a good grasp of the pre-number experiences identified for the two topics chosen;

-Search for relevant supporting literature from various sources and include the views of experienced Mathematics teachers regarding the implications highlighted in your discussion; and

-Summarise your points in the form of a written report using a suitable format. Submit relevant supporting documents, References in APA Format, graphic organisers, etc. as Appendices in your report.
