Introduction to Project Management

A new project manager has just joined a new company and is being mentored by more experienced project managers who are certified as Project Management Professionals (PMP). The new project manager is having difficulty finding enough time to manage the project because the project and product scope are being progressively planned over a period of time. The PMP certified project manager highlights that the basic tools such as Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) and Critical Path Method (CPM) can be used in project planning and executing to assist the project manager. The PMP certified project manager also added that without such tools the project will most likely fail.

An example of the WBS given by the PMP is shown below.

3.0 Define Needs

3.1.0 Interview clients

3.1.1 Interview on-site (est cost=$700)

3.1.2 Interview off-site( est cost=$2400)

3.2.0 Installations

3.2.1 Hardware Installations (est cost=$1200)

3.2.2 Software Installations (est cost=$1500)

a) What is the estimated cost of “Define Needs” in the above WBS as given by the PMP certified project manager?

b) Explain the key benefits of using a WBS in the project planning.

The PMP certified project manager has provided the new project manager the following Precedence Network Diagram. Work out the CPM for the project assigned to him and

i) Define ES/EF and LS/LF for each activity

ii) Determine the Critical Path of each activity

iii) How is the float affected if the sponsor/customer imposes an end date of 21 days?
